Self-Care Isn't Selfish

If there's one thing I enjoy, it's engaging in some good ol self-care. I take any opportunity I can to do something nice for myself. Self-care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own health. I like to think of it as a healthy activity that you feel is restorative to your overall health and well-being. When most people think of self-care i'm sure they envision pedicures and face masks. Now don't get me wrong, those are ways to restore yourself, but self-care comes in many different forms. I want you to think about the last time you really checked in with yourself when feeling depleted to assess exactly what you needed for restoration and recharge. We prioritize depending on our needs and depending on your experiences this will change and look different. Are you honoring this? Broadening your understanding of self-care can help you to keep yourself high on your priority list. Below I have included some different types of self-care and how you can keep your cup full.

Physical Self-Care
This is about taking care of our bodies. It doesn't have to look like a vigorous exercise routine but instead something that you enjoy.

  • Sleep
  • Hydration
  • Exercise/ Movement
  • Being Outside
  • Stretching/Yoga
  • Deep Breathing
  • Nutrition
Emotional Self-Care
This is about becoming more in tune with your emotions. Checking in with yourself and becoming more mindful of your thinking patterns and triggers and finding ways to work through them.
  • Stress Management
  • Compassion
  • Practicing Gratitude
  • Journaling
  • Me-Time
  • Therapy
  • Coping Skills
  • Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Being Creative
Social Self-Care
As humans we are naturally social beings who crave social interaction. This may look different depending on if you are an introvert or extrovert because our levels of social comfort varies.
  • Establishing Boundaries
  • Time With Friends
  • Time With Family
  • Date Night
  • Social Media
  • Being Present
  • Communication
Spiritual Self-Care
This is about nourishing your soul. It does not only have to relate to religion.
  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Sacred Space
  • Spending Time In Nature
  • Donating To Charity Or a Cause You Believe In
Intellectual Self-Care
This is about engaging in something that nourishes and challenges your mind and also expanding your knowledge.
  • Reading a Book
  • Learning a New Language
  • Watching a documentary
  • Researching a Topic of Interest

I hope you all found this helpful and you honor whatever it is you may need at this time for your overall health and well-being. Self-care is not selfish, it's self preservation.

Finding Harmony In Hard Times

Hey Hey! I don't know about you all but during this pandemic I've had to pull out all the stops to deal with the many emotions that have come up over the last year. With the stay at home order in place and working from home, my days can get pretty redundant. It's such a change from the “normal” we are used to so it's easy to feel overwhelmed.  I’ve also found at times the coping skills I usually turn to may not be accessible or even as effective as they used to be. COVID-19 has taken over the news, social media and every aspect of our lives in some way, shape or form. It has been A LOT. One thing that has helped calm my fluctuating anxiety is music. It has definitely been my solace and peace in these trying times. No matter the time of day I can find something to listen to that fits my mood. Here are a few of my favorite playlists that have helped keep me balanced over the last year:

ChillHop

Pretty much anything from chillhop is a go for me. I typically listen to this whenever I need to focus and concentrate. I used to be a person who needed to study or work in silence but now I find that I enjoy not only good background music, but good instrumental music. What I love about chillhop is its' blend of Dub/Reggae, Chillout, Hip Hop, and Jazz. If you love lofi hip hop and chill beats, then this is for you.

Soulection

If you know you know! Soulection is definitely that girl! I listen to new soulection radio releases as well as older releases because there is always a favorite. Soulection has been around for nine years and they never disappoint.

Jhene Aiko

I mean do I honestly need to say anymore?! I really could not make this list without including her. Jhene is a WHOLE VIBE. Her most recent project “Chilombo” is amazing but you could listen to her older projects and be equally blown away because they have aged very well!

Livestreams

With the need for social distancing celebs have gotten creative with being able to connect with their fans. While in quarantine I've tuned into many Verzuz livestreams on IG as well as some livestreams on Youtube. I've also loved tuning into DJ D-Nice's dance parties. These are all a way to make your time inside more bearable and exciting.

Share below some of the music selections that you've been enjoying lately!
